This collection of maps cover 127 quadrangles across 6 ranger districts: Quemado, Reserve, Glenwood, Wilderness, Black Range, and Silver City. The approximately 3.3 million acre Gila National Forest lies in southwestern New Mexico providing diverse landscapes of rugged mountains, deep canyons, meadows, and semi-desert country with many recreational opportunities. Gila National Forest has a number of special places, including 3 wilderness areas, dark sky parks, catwalks, cave dwellings, the Continental Divide Trail and 2 scenic byways. Elevations range from 4,200 to 10,900 ft covering a wide range of landscapes. Because of this, environmental conditions on the forest can change rapidly. Forest users may be faced with safety factors with which they should be familiar with, before venturing out.

Motorized Recreation

Explore and enjoy the more remote areas of the national forest using your sport utility/4-wheel drive vehicle, trail bike, or all-terrain vehicle (ATV). Many unimproved (high-clearance) roads on the forest are open to off-highway vehicles (OHV). The key to responsible use is to remain on designated roads and trails. New Mexico law requires registration or DMV-issued license plates for all OHVs. It is illegal to cut switchbacks, take shortcuts, or travel cross-country. Roads closed to motorized use may or may not be blocked, signed, or gated. The Forest’s Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) displays roads, trails, and areas open to motorized use. Please pick up a current copy at any local Forest Service office or download from: http://www.fs.usda.gov/goto/r3/mvum

More Americans than ever are using OHVs to enjoy the outdoors. However, if not managed carefully, motorized recreation can damage both the land and the resources that visitors come to enjoy. In 2005, the Forest Service published the Travel Management Rule which requires each national forest and grassland to designate those National Forest System (NFS) roads, NFS trails, and areas on NFS lands that are open to motor vehicle use on a motor vehicle use map (MVUM). It is the visitor’s responsibility to obtain the current MVUM for that national forest or grassland and comply with the designations.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0441/7850/5884/files/20221220180241_20221220_113444_298757_GILA_016_Escudilla_Mountain_preview_0.jpg?v=1723693494
escudilla-wilderness-apache-sitgreaves-national-forests-us-forest-service-r3-map
Escudilla Wilderness - Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests
Escudilla Wilderness, 2024

For more information or to purchase this map in hard copy, contact one of the offices listed on the back cover of the map, or go to https://store.usgs.gov/fsmaps

For additional recreation, safety information, and alerts visit the Apache - Sitgreaves National Forests home page at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/asnf

WELCOME... Escudilla Mountain is visible from all over eastern Arizona. The Wilderness encompasses the upper reaches of the mountain, which at 10,912 feet is the third highest in the state of Arizona. It was this mountain that Aldo Leopold referred to in his article "Thinking Like a Mountain" where he arrived at the side of a wolf he had shot "in time to watch a fierce green fire dying in her eyes," an experience that he grew to regret and which forever changed his life. The last known grizzly bear in Arizona was killed here, and Leopold wrote: "Somehow it seems that the spirit of the bear is still there, prowling the huge meadows, lurking in the thick stands of aspen and spruce, wandering the steep slopes that looking down from is like looking out of the window of an airplane."

Motorized equipment and equipment used for mechanical transport is prohibited in all wilderness. This includes the use of motor vehicles, motorboats, motorized equipment, bicycles, hang gliders, wagons, carts, portage wheels, and the landing of aircraft including helicopters.

The maximum group size for overnight camping is 25 persons per campsite. The maximum number of pack and riding stock per party is 35 per group. The maximum number of people for hiking and riding day use is 25 persons.
Two trails give access to Escudilla Wilderness. The three-mile, well maintained Escudilla National Recreation Trail #308, and Government Trail #119.

Escudilla Trail (6-mile round trip) accesses the top of Arizona’s third highest mountain and is such an outstanding trail that it has been given recognition by Congress as a national recreational trail.
The scenery is magnificent, the surroundings are picturesque and the walking is comparatively easy, considering the elevations reached.
After leaving the first aspen grove, the trail passes through stands of spruce, fir, and more aspen alternating with large open meadows as it continues the climb to the top. Along that climb, various overlooks provide awe-inspiring views of the countryside over which this sky island towers. The first views to the south and west occur about a mile from the trailhead at the top of Tool Box Draw. They're almost as good as those at the top of the mountain. If it's views you seek, you don't even have to hike all the way to the top.

Government Trail #119 starts at the base of the mountain and also climbs to the summit as it ascends Profanity Ridge. You will find little water along these trails, but views that reach to Flagstaff over 150 miles away once near the top.
Escudilla Wilderness was severely affected by the Wallow Fire in June of 2011, which, coincidently, started within the Bear Wallow Wilderness depicted on the other side of this map by an unattended campfire. Even now, more than a decade later, damage resulting from that fire is clearly visible. Government Trail was severely affected by the Wallow Fire and remains indistinct and difficult to follow in heavily burned areas.

Directions:
Take US 191/180 north from Alpine, AZ approximately 5.5 miles and turn right (east) onto Forest Road 8056.

For Government Trail (# 119), continue up this dirt road for 1.6 miles to a road which branches to the left and is closed by a “Wildlife Area” sign. Park here and follow the closed road 1.9 miles to the point where Government Trail branches off and heads up the mountain.

For Escudilla National Recreation Trail (# 308), follow FR 8056 for 3.6 miles from US 191/180 to Terry Flat. Take the left fork at the sign for the Escudilla Trailhead an additional 0.5 miles.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0441/7850/5884/files/us-forest-service-r3-escudilla-wilderness2024-avenza-map-1700575-preview-0_d9ceed34-c931-4fc4-aeb7-ba0dc2adfab4.jpg?v=1739368742
