This unit offers some of the most rugged and diverse terrain in all of eastern Colorado, blending shortgrass prairie, cholla flats, juniper-studded canyons, mesas, sandstone breaks, sagebrush hills, CRP fields, and dryland farms. Deep drainages and rough escarpments carve through the southern portion of the unit, creating exceptional habitat variety.\r\n\r\nGMU 121 is known for excellent pronghorn (antelope) hunting, with herds widely distributed across the open prairie, rangeland, and agricultural areas. Mule deer thrive in the breaks, canyons, mesa tops, and juniper-covered slopes, while white-tailed deer appear in localized pockets along creek drainages, cottonwood bottoms, and irrigated field edges. Compared to other plains units, GMU 121’s rugged terrain provides better escape cover and can hold larger-bodied mule deer bucks.\r\n\r\nAlthough public land exists in small fragments, the majority of GMU 121 is private ranchland. Hunters must secure landowner permission or rely on Colorado Parks \u0026amp; Wildlife’s Walk-In Access (WIA) parcels where available. Sandy draws, canyon edges, CRP corners, and sagebrush flats are key areas for big-game and upland hunters alike.\r\n\r\nUpland and small-game opportunities include scaled quail, bobwhite quail, ring-necked pheasant, dove, coyote, fox, and jackrabbit.
