This is one of the most dramatic and diverse units in eastern Colorado, characterized by red-rock canyons, steep breaks, mesa tops, cholla flats, shortgrass prairie, pinyon-juniper hillsides, and scattered agricultural pockets. Rugged escarpments and deep drainages define much of the terrain, offering both excellent cover and long glassing opportunities.\r\n\r\nGMU 122 is prime mule deer country, with deer thriving in the canyons, mesa edges, juniper pockets, and broken terrain. The southern portion of the unit consistently holds some of the better mule deer habitat on the plains. Pronghorn (antelope) are widely distributed across the open prairie, rangeland, and agricultural fields, especially toward the east and northeast. White-tailed deer are less common but occur along creek bottoms, shelterbelts, and irrigated edges where cover and water converge.\r\n\r\nPublic land exists in small but important blocks, with the majority of the unit consisting of private ranchland, making landowner permission essential. Colorado Parks \u0026amp; Wildlife’s Walk-In Access (WIA) program may provide limited seasonal opportunity, especially for upland and predator hunters.\r\n\r\nUpland and small-game opportunities include scaled quail, bobwhite quail, dove, coyote, fox, and jackrabbit.
