This is one of the state’s most remote and scenic plains units, blending high-plains prairie with dramatic canyonlands, including juniper-covered mesas, steep escarpments, rolling sage flats, cholla-covered slopes, deep draws, and rugged sandstone breaks. The terrain is diverse, wild, and exceptionally well-suited for spot-and-stalk big-game hunting.\r\n\r\nGMU 124 is known for excellent mule deer hunting, with deer widely distributed throughout the canyons, rimrock benches, juniper pockets, and broken sage country. Bucks often bed in rugged terrain and move into open flats during low-light periods, creating ideal conditions for glass-and-stalk hunting. Pronghorn (antelope) are abundant across the open prairie, stubble fields, and rolling grasslands, especially in the northern and northeastern portions of the unit. White-tailed deer occur in small, localized pockets along creek corridors, cottonwood bottoms, and irrigated edges.\r\n\r\nPublic land exists in limited amounts, but most of GMU 124 consists of expansive private ranch holdings, so landowner permission is essential. Colorado Parks \u0026amp; Wildlife’s Walk-In Access (WIA) program may add seasonal opportunity, particularly for small game and upland hunters.\r\n\r\nUpland and small-game hunters will encounter scaled quail, bobwhite quail, dove, coyote, fox, and jackrabbit.
