Centered between the towns of Minturn, Red Cliff, Leadville, and Camp Hale, this unit is defined by steep alpine peaks, deep glacial valleys, dense spruce-fir forests, and high-elevation meadows. It is some of the most stunning yet demanding hunting terrain in the state — remote, rugged, and full of opportunity for those willing to climb.\r\n\r\nElk are the primary big-game species in GMU 46, with herds scattered across wilderness basins, timbered ridges, and remote drainages. Early-season hunters often find elk high in the subalpine basins before snowfall drives them to lower elevations near Homestake Creek, Camp Hale, and Red Cliff. Mule deer are also found throughout the unit, particularly along open ridgelines, aspen slopes, and transition zones between timber and meadow. Due to elevation and terrain, both species can be highly mobile and responsive to weather. Black bears are occasionally seen in late summer and fall, especially in berry-rich areas near the wilderness boundary.\r\n\r\nWhile access can be challenging, GMU 46 offers vast stretches of public land and wilderness, making it ideal for backcountry hunters seeking solitude.
