Its proximity to Denver and Colorado Springs makes it one of the most accessible yet challenging hunting units in the region.\r\n\r\nElk are the primary big-game species here, with healthy herds spread across the national forest. Early in the season, elk can be found in the higher timber and secluded drainages, but as hunting pressure increases and temperatures cool, they move to quieter, lower-elevation areas. Mule deer are also common throughout GMU 461, particularly in open hillsides and transitional zones between timber and meadow.
