Each map includes spectacular 3D hillshade topography, contour lines, public-land ownership boundaries, major roads only, key terrain features, and hydrology. Federal lands include BLM, USFS, and others where applicable.

Lose yourself hunting Colorado’s wide-open country — yet NEVER GET LOST!

GMU 89 lies east of I-25 in the northeastern plains of Colorado, covering portions of Morgan, Washington, and Weld Counties around the towns of Wiggins, Hillrose, Brush, and Woodrow. The landscape transitions from the fertile South Platte River corridor to rolling shortgrass prairie and dryland farms, offering diverse habitat for both big game and upland birds.

White-tailed deer thrive along the South Platte and its wooded tributaries, where dense cottonwoods, irrigation canals, and cropland edges provide food and cover. Mule deer are more common across the open uplands and broken prairies to the east, while pronghorn (antelope) roam the broad rangeland and sage-covered flats. Although most of the unit is privately owned, hunters can find opportunities through Colorado Parks & Wildlife’s Walk-In Access (WIA) properties and by securing landowner permission for access.

Because GMU 89 sits squarely in the South Platte Flyway, it also offers excellent upland and waterfowl hunting. Pheasants, bobwhite and scaled quail, ducks, and geese all frequent this area, particularly near grain stubble fields, shelterbelts, and wetland corridors. It’s a true mixed-bag unit—ideal for hunters who enjoy both big-game and bird pursuits in the same day.

Why Hunters Trust Our Maps

GPS-accurate and works offline in the free Avenza Map app

3D hillshade topography and contour lines for terrain awareness

Public and private-land boundaries (state trust, county, and BLM where applicable) clearly marked

Major roads only — no cluttered trail networks

Key terrain features: South Platte River, Beaver Creek, irrigation canals, shelterbelts, and stock ponds

Clean, easy-to-read format designed for plains hunters

Mark your camp, harvest sites, glassing points, and bird-hunting fields

Could save your life by allowing rescue personnel to locate you precisely in an emergency

Recommended Hunting Targets in GMU 89

Big Game: White-Tailed Deer (primary), Mule Deer, Pronghorn

Birds: Ring-Necked Pheasant, Bobwhite & Scaled Quail, Ducks & Geese (South Platte Flyway and local ponds)

Note: Nearly all of GMU 89 consists of private farmland and ranchland. Hunters should plan ahead to obtain landowner permission or target CPW Walk-In Access parcels for legal entry. Riverbottom areas and irrigated fields offer outstanding deer and bird potential, particularly during late-season migrations.

Mobile Map Tips: Use airplane mode to conserve battery and disable background apps. Carry a spare power pack or solar charger—service is spotty on the plains. For upland birds, hunt field edges, weedy corners, and CRP fields near grain crops; for deer and pronghorn, glass early and late along transitions between cover and feeding areas.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0441/7850/5884/files/map-the-xperience-2025-colorado-hunt-map-gmu-89-map-1713030-preview-0_da044cca-9433-4705-a985-b1e30b66d449.jpg?v=1761744333
