Each map includes spectacular 3D hillshade topography, contour lines, public-land ownership boundaries, major roads only, key terrain features, and hydrology. Federal lands include BLM, USFS, and others where applicable.

Lose yourself hunting Colorado’s wide-open country — yet NEVER GET LOST!

GMU 97 lies east of I-25 in the northeastern plains of Colorado, encompassing portions of Logan, Phillips, and Sedgwick Counties near the towns of Julesburg, Ovid, Sedgwick, and Crook. The landscape here is defined by the South Platte River corridor, surrounded by fertile cropland, cottonwood bottoms, CRP grasslands, and open prairie. This mix of water, food, and cover provides some of the best habitat for white-tailed deer, pheasant, and waterfowl in the entire state.

Hunters will find exceptional white-tailed deer hunting along the river and irrigation corridors, where mature bucks use the dense cover of willow thickets and shelterbelts. Mule deer and pronghorn (antelope) occupy the upland prairies and dryland farm country to the south and west. While most of GMU 97 is privately owned, hunters can gain legal access through Colorado Parks & Wildlife’s Walk-In Access (WIA) program or by obtaining landowner permission.

Because GMU 97 sits squarely in the South Platte Flyway, it’s also one of Colorado’s premier destinations for waterfowl and upland bird hunting. Ducks and geese migrate heavily through the river valley each fall, while pheasants and quail thrive in CRP fields, milo stubble, and brushy fencerows.

Why Hunters Trust Our Maps

GPS-accurate and works offline in the free Avenza Map app

3D hillshade topography and contour lines for terrain awareness

Public and private-land boundaries (state trust, county, and BLM where applicable) clearly displayed

Major roads only — no dense trail networks

Key terrain features: South Platte River, irrigation canals, CRP fields, shelterbelts, ponds, and wetland basins

Clean, easy-to-read format designed for plains hunters

Mark your camp, glassing points, harvest sites, and bird-hunting fields

Could save your life by allowing rescue personnel to pinpoint your exact location in an emergency

Recommended Hunting Targets in GMU 97

Big Game: White-Tailed Deer (primary), Mule Deer, Pronghorn

Birds: Ring-Necked Pheasant, Bobwhite & Scaled Quail, Ducks & Geese (South Platte Flyway and wetlands)

Note: Nearly all of GMU 97 is private farmland and ranchland. Hunters must obtain landowner permission or use CPW Walk-In Access parcels for legal entry. The South Platte corridor and adjacent fields hold excellent numbers of whitetails and waterfowl, while uplands and CRP fields support abundant pheasants and quail.

Mobile Map Tips

Use airplane mode to conserve battery and disable background apps. Carry a backup power pack or solar charger—coverage can be limited on the plains. For deer and pronghorn, glass early and late along crop edges and riparian corridors; for birds, hunt CRP, milo stubble, and weedy draws near food and water sources.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0441/7850/5884/files/map-the-xperience-2025-colorado-hunt-map-gmu-97-map-1713193-preview-0.jpg?v=1761838230
