The unit features a mix of irrigated farmland, shelterbelts, shortgrass prairie, and the South Platte River corridor, offering outstanding habitat diversity for both big game and upland birds.\r\n\r\nHunters will find excellent white-tailed deer hunting along the South Platte and its tributaries, where cottonwoods, thick cover, and grain fields attract quality bucks. Mule deer roam the upland draws and agricultural edges, while pronghorn (antelope) frequent the open plains to the east. Public access is limited, but Colorado Parks \u0026amp; Wildlife’s Walk-In Access (WIA) program offers hunters valuable opportunities on private lands enrolled for seasonal use.\r\n\r\nGMU 96 lies east of I-25 in the northeastern plains of Colorado, covering portions of Logan and Washington Counties near the towns of Sterling, Atwood, and Merino. The South Platte River corridor dominates this unit, surrounded by fertile irrigated cropland, cottonwood bottoms, and rolling prairie that provide some of the best big-game and bird habitat in eastern Colorado.\r\n\r\nThis area is well-known for its high-quality white-tailed deer hunting, with mature bucks thriving along the river and in the dense cover of shelterbelts and irrigated fields. Mule deer and pronghorn are found in the upland prairies and open farmland to the south and east. While most land in GMU 96 is private, Walk-In Access (WIA) parcels and cooperative landowners provide excellent hunting options for both big game and small game.\r\n\r\nBecause GMU's 95 and 96 lie along the South Platte Flyway, they also are a premier area for upland and waterfowl hunting.
