Elk typically bed in the pinyon-juniper woodlands, oakbrush pockets, and remote timbered benches where shade, cover, and water are plentiful. Early and late in the day, elk move into higher mesas, grassy openings, canyon bottoms, and sagebrush flats to feed. During hunting pressure, they often retreat into the steepest terrain—tight side canyons, high rimrock benches, or hidden pockets tucked against cliff walls.\r\n\r\nMule deer in the Book Cliffs are legendary. Bucks often bed in breaks, shale slides, oakbrush patches, and the shadowed edges of mesas. They feed across sagebrush benches and canyon bottoms, using the diverse terrain to avoid pressure. Glassing long distances from high vantage points is often the key to locating mature bucks.\r\n\r\nHunting the Book Cliffs requires endurance, glassing skills, and strong navigation in remote country. Spot-and-stalk hunting is the dominant method, with hunters spending long hours behind optics scanning vast canyon systems and mesas. Stalks must be planned carefully—winds swirl unpredictably in canyon terrain, and distances can be deceiving. In timbered or brushy areas, slow still-hunting along saddles, benches, springs, and natural funnels is often effective.
