Known for producing trophy-class bucks year after year, the Paunsaugunt Plateau rises above the surrounding desert in a dramatic landscape of red cliffs, pine forests, aspen groves, sagebrush benches, rolling meadows, and rugged canyon systems. The region’s elevation, habitat diversity, and genetics create the ideal environment for mature mule deer to thrive.\r\n\r\nThe heart of the unit consists of high-elevation forests and meadows atop the Paunsaugunt Plateau, transitioning to steep breaks, hoodoo formations, pinyon-juniper foothills, and brushy canyon country along the edges. Mule deer utilize this range of habitat throughout the year, shifting elevation in response to forage availability, weather patterns, and pressure.\r\n\r\nMule deer bucks in the Paunsaugunt Unit often spend early seasons in high-country basins, aspen groves, timber pockets, and the cool north-facing slopes. They feed at dawn and dusk along meadow edges, sagebrush clearings, and forest openings. As hunting pressure increases or fall storms arrive, deer begin transitioning toward lower-elevation benches, brushy slopes, and canyon country along the eastern and southern escarpments—areas that provide both forage and escape cover.\r\n\r\nThe unit’s rugged red-rock terrain—particularly along the edges near Bryce Canyon, Hancock Road, and the southern rim—creates ideal vantage points for long-range glassing.
