The terrain is open, dry, and highly visible, forming classic basin elk country where terrain and distance—not cover—define elk behavior.\r\n\r\nElk in the Lincoln unit typically bed in rimrock benches, shallow draws, low ridgelines, and broken terrain features that offer concealment in an otherwise open landscape. Rather than relying on timber, elk use elevation changes, broken ground, and visibility to detect pressure early. At dawn and dusk, elk move into sagebrush benches, grassy flats, basin bottoms, and riparian corridors where forage is most available. Area 104 functions primarily as a migration and winter-use unit, with elk numbers increasing as animals move down from surrounding mountain ranges during colder weather and snow events.\r\n\r\nHunting Area 104 strongly favors long-range glassing and patient spot-and-stalk tactics. Successful hunters spend significant time behind optics, scanning large expanses from elevated benches, rimrock edges, or subtle high points. Because natural cover is minimal, wind direction, timing, and patience are critical.
