butte-falls-oregon-discovery-loop-stories-of-southern-oregon-map
Butte Falls Oregon Discovery Loop
This base map shows the Butte Falls Discovery Loop in a highlighted route as well as the terrain, roads, and property ownership. The Loop is a 66 mile route through dense forests that were first harvested in 1906 by the Brownlee Olds Lumber Company, then by Owen-Oregon and beginning in 1933, by Medford Corporation more commonly known as MedCo. A .kmz file is available for this map, which when imported, pins the historic logging camps, scenic areas, railroad routes and more. The .kmz file includes historic photos, descriptions, lat/long, elevation and allows the user to use GPS navigation to locate their position as they travel the Loop. Visit StoriesofSouthernOregon.com to retrieve the kmz file.

This region of southwestern Oregon is at high elevation and is densely forested acres. The base map shows Jackson County, Oregon paved roads as well as unpaved Forest Service roads that are generally used by loggers.

At the high elevation of these roads, many are blocked by snow even in mid-summer. Many of the roads are deeply potholed and are dangerous to traverse. Because many of these roads are on private land and timber harvests occur throughout the year, fast moving and heavily loaded logging trucks are an everyday occurrence and have right of way.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0441/7850/5884/files/stories-of-southern-oregon-bfroute-roads-map-1693753-preview-0.jpg?v=1745433638
