The park protects more than 1,500 acres of Western Highland Rim forest and is accessed directly from the historic Natchez Trace Parkway, managed by the National Park Service. Currently open for day use, it features a rugged hiking trail within a protected State Natural Area.\r\n\r\nOriginally acquired in the 1960s with the intention of being a state park, the land opened as a State Natural Area in 1997. As a State Natural Area, the land became known for recreational hiking among its diverse tree species, which have been undisturbed for at least 60 years.\r\n\r\nThe name “Devil’s Backbone” comes from its proximity to the Natchez Trace Parkway, whose primitive roots date back more than 10,000 years and served as a travel route for Native Americans, travelers and settlers. When viewed on a map, the route ties together three states similar to that of a spine.\r\n\r\nIn addition to serving as a major travel route, it also carried a reputation for danger. Stories of bandits, thieves and outlaws are believed to have influenced the name “Devil’s Backbone.”","brand":"Tennessee State Parks","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":46590293737628,"sku":"1787049","price":0.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0441\/7850\/5884\/files\/tennessee-state-parks-devils-backbone-state-park-natural-area-map-1787049-preview-0.jpg?v=1774617435","url":"https:\/\/store.avenza.com\/products\/devils-backbone-state-park-natural-area-tennessee-state-parks-map","provider":"Avenza Maps","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
