Extending from Cottonwood Canyon in the south to 6 miles north of Austin, Nevada, this rugged range has limited access due to its terrain. The west side rises gradually from a well traveled dirt road which winds through Reese River Valley. The east side rises sharply from Big Smoky Valley and is dissected with numerous rocky canyons. Arc Dome, Nevada's largest wilderness (115,000 acres) lies within this mountain range.
Located off U.S. Highway 95, approximately halfway between Reno and Las Vegas (a little over 200 miles from each) is the largest ranger district in the lower 48 states: Tonopah Ranger District. The district encompasses approximately 1.12 million acres on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Tonopah, population 2,800, is the nearest town and houses the District Ranger Station. A chain of mountains, separated by long valleys, stretches north-to-south across the central Nevada forming the mountainous terrain of which the District is comprised. Throughout this landscape, visitors will find a host of wild places, historic sites and recreation opportunities. Among the most popular are Arc Dome, Table Mountain and Alta Toquima Wilderness Areas, historic mining towns, and Round Mountain Gold Corporation open-pit gold mine in Big Smoky Valley.

A printed copy of this map can be purchased at:
https://store.usgs.gov/maps
Regional Office and Supervisor Office Addresses

Intermountain Region
Federal Building
324 25th Street
Ogden, UT 84401
http://www.fs.usda.gov/r4

Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest
1200 Franklin Way
Sparks, NV 89431
775-331-6444
http://www.fs.usda.gov/htnf

A motor vehicle use map (MVUM) is a legal enforceable document that identifies the roads, trails, and areas where motor vehicle use is allowed in a Forest Service administrative unit or ranger district.
