Kariba (狩場山, Kariba-yama 1520m) is the highest mountain in the southern part of Hokkaido and is an andesitic stratovolcano that was active 800,000 to 250,000 years ago. The name "Kariba" is said to be derived from "karinpa-us", which means "a place with a lot of cherry (bark)" in the Ainu language. Near the summit of Mt. Kariba, around August, you can see meadows filled with various flowering alpine plants.
Garo Kogen (Garo Plateau) stretches at the foot of the mountain and is home to Garo Waterfall, which was voted one of the top 100 waterfalls in Japan. However, the area is now heavily overgrown and the waterfall is no longer easily visible from any vantage point. In this area, the Ezo brown bears feel very much at home in the vast Japanese beech forests around the mountain. So be prepared!
(Text by Markus Hauser)

Kariba-yama is one of the 300 Famous Mountains of Japan (日本三百名山, Nihon Sanbyakumeizan), a list chosen by the Japanese Alpine Club (日本山岳会) in 1978 as an extension of Japan 100 Famous Mountains.

JAPANWILDS.ORG | Best Hiking Maps and Blogs in Japan
https://japanwilds.org

Map © The Hokkaido Cartographer
Email: cartographer@japanwilds.org
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0441/7850/5884/files/20220823130614_Karibayama_Avenza_Export_preview_0_c72f44c7-a748-4fa6-b623-e44f811f4e90.jpg?v=1735506832
https://store.avenza.com/products/kariba-yama-shou-chang-shan-hiking-map-hokkaido-japan-125000-japanwildsorg-map
