From the summit you can see the Zao mountain range and the city of Yamagata.
It is also famous as the site of a fierce battle between the Mogami and Uesugi armies during the Keicho Dewa War (1600). There is an anecdote that Uesugi general Naoe Kanetsugu looked out over Yamagata Castle in the distance from the summit, but was unable to see through the mist and continued gazing for ten days, which is why this mountain came to be called "Tokamiyama". Toka means ten days in Japanese. Mi means to watch. Together, Tokami means ‘searching for ten days’. Yamagata locals, and now you too, like to voice sounds; Tokami becomes Togami.
(Text by Tim Bunting)

Explore the 100 Famous Mountains of Yamagata with Tim Bunting, the Kiwi Yamabushi.
https://timbunting.com/mountains/togami/

JAPANWILDS.ORG | Best Hiking Maps and Blogs in Japan
https://japanwilds.org

Map © The Hokkaido Cartographer
Email: cartographer@japanwilds.org
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0441/7850/5884/files/japanwildsorg-togamiyama-avenza-export-map-1696870-preview-0.jpg?v=1735503748
https://store.avenza.com/products/togami-yama-fu-shen-shan-hiking-map-tohoku-japan-110000-japanwildsorg-map
