Low water later in the season exposes rocky bars and shallow stretches that discourage river running.\r\n\r\nOnce inside the canyon the river moves fast. Tepee, Little Joe, and Big Joe rapids build toward Warm Springs -- the Yampa's wildest water at Class III-IV, scouting strongly suggested. Warm Springs formed in a single June 1965 flood event and commands respect at any water level. The canyon walls throughout are massive Weber Sandstone, topping out over 1,000 feet in places, with petroglyphs, pictographs, and side canyon hikes including Signature Cave and the Grand Overhang accessible along the way.\r\n\r\nAt Echo Park the Yampa joins the Green at the base of Steamboat Rock. Boaters can feel the river change -- the combined flow is noticeably larger, and the Yampa's silt load builds the beaches that define camping in this corridor.
