What is a Christmas Tree Cutting Permit?
A Christmas tree permit is a permit that lets you cut down one tree for personal use in a national forest. Cutting a wild Christmas tree isn’t just a fun and affordable holiday tradition, it also supports forest health. Removing small, crowded trees helps prevent wildfires and gives other trees more space to grow.
Most forests charge between $5 and $10 per tree, and each forest has its own rules. These rules usually include how tall or wide your tree can be, where you’re allowed to cut, and the safest way to cut it. You can buy a permit online at recreation.gov/tree-permits or at your local Forest Service office. Because each forest sets its own schedule, be sure to check your forest’s permit dates and guidelines before you go.
Cutting Your Tree
Many forests provide maps specifically for Avenza Maps. These maps work offline, use your phone’s GPS, and show exactly where you can legally cut a tree, even in areas without cell service. Be sure to download your forest’s official map before your trip so you have everything you need. This will help you avoid private land and stay on roads that are open to vehicles.
When you arrive at the forest, open the map in Avenza Maps. Your GPS dot will show your location and help you confirm that you’re inside a legal cutting area. Once you’re in the right spot, look for dense groups of Christmas tree-sized trees. Forests prefer that you choose these smaller trees because removing them helps the rest of the forest grow healthier.
After you’ve picked your tree, cut it according to your forest’s rules. When the tree is down, attach your permit tag as instructed so it’s clearly visible. Finally, tie the tree securely to your vehicle to keep it safe during the drive home.
How to Keep Your Tree Fresh
When you get your tree home, make a fresh cut by trimming about half an inch off the bottom of the trunk, which will help the tree absorb water. After that, place it in a sturdy stand filled with plenty of water. Try to get it into water as soon as possible so it stays fresh longer.
Check the water level every day and make sure the stand never runs dry. A tree can drink quite a bit, and keeping it hydrated will help prevent needles from drying out. Place your tree away from heaters and fireplaces, and use low-heat lights to reduce drying.
Once the holidays are over, take the tree out of your home before it becomes too dry. Use your community’s tree recycling or chipping program to dispose of it in an environmentally friendly way.
