Avenza User Conference 2023

The Avenza User Conference is a free virtual conference for map makers, GIS enthusiasts, and geospatial professionals worldwide who share a common interest in Avenza mapping technology. The conference is a combination of virtual sessions led by experts who shared their experiences with Avenza mapping products.

Hamza Salman, the Product Manager at Avenza Maps, oversees product development and release planning for both the Android and iOS platforms. His primary responsibilities include streamlining developer operations, prioritizing feature implementation, and conducting user research. Tristan Lyttle, the Senior Product Manager at Avenza Maps, is responsible for managing the Avenza Maps QR Code Program. Additionally, he defines the program's scope and collaborates with development teams to incorporate feedback and integrate new features into the application.

Avenza Maps Updates, New Features and What’s Coming Next

At this year's Avenza UC, Tristan and Hamza delivered a presentation highlighting the various changes and updates since the previous user conference in 2022. They discussed several improvements, such as the redesigned Layers UI, the introduction of the Basemaps beta, the capability to import multi-page PDFs, and the enhanced information retrieval from the elevation service feature. The main focus of the new release is to enhance performance, resulting in a significantly faster Avenza Maps app. The startup load time has been greatly reduced, enabling quick and efficient loading of PDF, TIFF, and JPEG files. Additionally, an exciting new feature is the support for GeoPackage, allowing for the packaging of both vector and raster data.

In addition, Tristan provided insights into the future of Avenza Maps. The team has put a lot of effort into the Basemaps feature, which will include additional layers and support for various data types. The Map viewer will undergo a substantial transformation in conjunction with the implementation of basemaps. Future enhancements will prioritize simplifying the overall user experience to ensure a more enjoyable mapping journey. A centralized notification center will help consolidate all alerts, preventing users from missing any important updates. Furthermore, this year will witness several other improvements to features and tools, such as Backup & Restore, Symbology, and Photo Metadata.
