The tallest non-redwood tree in the world . . . . right in our back yard
BLM foresters use Avenza Maps; Roads and directions are accurate. We consulted with one of our boys who manages BLM roads in the Coos Bay district for current road conditions. Most of the roads are maintained year-round as it includes the old Coos Bay Wagon Road, but portions of the route are at near 3,000' elevation and often blocked by trees/limbs fallen during winter storms. Depending on which direction you are traveling, the route can be a confusing maze of roads and intersections are not always well signed; we are familiar with the area, but without the map might have had trouble finding the trailhead. The road in from the Roseburg side is more direct - a quicker, shorter route than the one we took from the Myrtle Point/Coquille side, through Fairview, that took over two hours. Be aware, there are gates restricting access to spur roads leading to adjoining private timberland that were not indicated on the map - good, since you are less likely to take a wrong turn. Check with BLM office for road conditions and stay on main BLM roads.
