Introduce yourself! Give a brief introduction of who you are and what your company is, and what you do.
[English] Fraternali Editore started publishing topographic maps in 2007. You can find our 1/25,000 scale maps in sport and hiking books. Our strategy involves surveying the footpaths using GPS technology and intense verification work. Fraternali Editore bases their maps on official data of the Cartographic Service of Regione Piemonte, Regione Liguria, Regione Valle d’Aosta, and of the French National Geographic Institute. You can also find digital versions of all our maps.
Fraternali Editore is an official partner of Avenza Maps and Garmin Italia.

[Italiano] Fraternali Editore pubblica dal 2007 cartografia di dettaglio alla scala 1/25.000 e libri di interesse escursionistico e sportivo. Le attività di rilievo dei sentieri sono realizzate con tecnologia GPS, tramite un attento lavoro di verifica sul campo. La base cartografica utilizza i dati ufficiali del Servizio Cartografico della Regione Piemonte, della Regione Liguria, della Regione Valle d’Aosta e dell’IGN, Istituto Geografico Nazionale francese.

How did you get into cartography?
[English] I have always had a great interest in maps. As a child, I spent a lot of time watching and studying maps of all kinds. When I was about six years old, my father gave me a large atlas: the Italian Touring Atlas, in the 1973 edition (which also happens to be my birth year). The Atlas is a large volume, which looks like it came out of a library from the 1800s, and I spent countless afternoons studying it after school.
Come sei arrivato alla cartografia?
[Italiano] Ho sempre avuto un grande interesse per le mappe, da bambino passavo molto tempo a guardare e studiare le carte geografiche, di qualsiasi genere. Quando avevo 6 o 7 anni mio padre mi regalò un grande Atlante: l’Atlante del Touring italiano, nell’edizione del 1973 (che è anche il mio anno di nascita). E’ un grande volume, che sembra uscito da una biblioteca del 1800, sul quale ho passato innumerevoli pomeriggi, al termine delle lezioni di scuola, fantasticando sui luoghi del mondo e sulle mappe.
How did you find out about Avenza Maps?
[English] In 2013 we started to publish the digital versions of our maps on software made by a Spanish company. However, users began reporting bugs, so we started looking for viable alternatives. A software developer told me about Avenza, advising me to use this app, and I’d never heard of it before. According to him could be of great use to us, which turned out to be true!

[Italiano] Abbiamo iniziato nel 2013 a pubblicare le versioni digitali delle nostre mappe, per mezzo di software realizzati da una società spagnola. Ad un certo punto però gli Utenti hanno cominciato a segnalarci dei malfunzionamenti, così abbiamo cominciato a cercare delle alternative valide.Uno sviluppatore di software mi ha segnalato Avenza, consigliandomi questa app, che io non conoscevo, e che secondo lui avrebbe potuto esserci molto utile. Aveva perfettamente ragione.

How does Avenza Maps work for you?
[English] Avenza provides us with a simple solution to make our digital maps more accessible. We upload our maps into our account, where we can update them frequently and effectively. In this way, we can enable customers to purchase our maps directly from the map store. We also provide free cartographic products that we create for both public and private institutions, which deal with the promotion of hiking and tourism. At this moment, Avenza is the only tool that allows us to distribute products for free, and for us, this is very important.
Come funziona Avenza Maps per te?
[Italiano] Avenza ci permette di rendere disponibili le nostre mappe digitali in maniera molto semplice, per mezzo del nostro account su cui possiamo caricare le mappe, aggiornandole in maniera frequente ed efficace.
Possiamo così distribuire mappe singole e collezioni di mappe, a pagamento. Ma anche prodotti cartografici gratuiti che realizziamo su incarico di Enti pubblici e privati, che si occupano di promuovere l’escursionismo ed il turismo. In questo momento Avenza è l’unico strumento che permette di distribuire prodotti a titolo gratuito, e per noi questo è veramente molto importante.
Why do you think digital maps are important?
[English] Digital maps, used on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, represent the present and the future of cartography. With Avenza Maps, we can distribute georeferenced maps, and users can display them off-line without a data connection. For hikers, digital maps improve safety while out on the trail, allowing you to always know with precision your position and the direction you are moving in. Digital maps integrate perfectly with printed maps, which remain an essential tool in getting an overview of the terrain, assisting with trip-planning, and developing a better understanding of the area.
Perché pensa che le mappe digitali siano importanti?
[Italiano] Le mappe digitali rappresentano il presente ed il futuro della cartografia, se utilizzate tramite dispositivi mobili come smartphone e tablet. Tramite app come Avenza è possibile distribuire mappe raster georeferenziate, che potranno poi essere visualizzate in modalità off-line senza la necessità della connessione dati. Per gli escursionisti le mappe digitali sono fondamentali per la gestione in sicurezza di una gita, permettendo di conoscere sempre con precisione la propria posizione e la direzione verso la quale si stanno spostando. Le mappe digitali si integrano perfettamente con le mappe stampate, che rimangono uno strumento essenziale per avere una visione di assieme, per pianificare una gita, e conoscere il territorio.
How do you and your company connect with users?
[English] We have a website and participate in local fairs and events. We can communicate with the people who live in the region thanks to the public institutions, which we work with frequently.
Come vi connettete voi e la vostra azienda con gli utenti?
[Italiano] Abbiamo un nostro sito internet, e partecipiamo a fiere ed eventi. Siamo in contatto con il territorio grazie agli Enti pubblici, con cui collaboriamo frequentemente.
What are your future goals for Fraternali Editore?
[English] In 2022 we will complete the mapping of the Aosta Valley, and in May, we will be releasing two new maps. In 2023 we will focus on Liguria and the Canavese areas.
Quali sono i tuoi obiettivi futuri per Fraternali Editore?
[Italiano] Nel 2022 completeremo la mappatura della Valle d’Aosta, a maggio usciranno due nuove carte. Per il 2023 ci concentreremo sulla Liguria, e sul Canavese.
What is your favourite part of creating maps? And favourite part of the Avenza Maps app (or the whole process, anything Avenza Maps related)?
[English] Cartography is our profession, and all the processing phases are a source of great satisfaction.
We take care of the entire map-production process. It starts with ground-truthing the paths, which we do ourselves, covering thousands of kilometres on foot and by car, every year. We process all the data collected through a GIS software that allows us to manage all the different cartographic stages, up to the generation of the finished file that we send to the printer. And finally, we get to the end of our journey by putting the digital versions on the Avenza Maps Store. Avenza Maps allows us to share and distribute the result of months and months of work in a very short time.
Qual è la tua parte preferita nella creazione di mappe? E la parte preferita dell'app Avenza Maps (o l'intero processo, tutto ciò che riguarda Avenza Maps)?
[Italiano] La cartografia è il nostro mestiere, e tutte le fasi di lavorazione sono fonte di grande soddisfazione. Ci occupiamo di tutto il processo produttivo. Si parte dal rilievo diretto dei sentieri, che effettuiamo noi direttamente, facendo migliaia di chilometri a piedi ed in auto, ogni anno. Poi occorre elaborare tutti i dati rilevati sul campo, tramite un software GIS che ci permette di gestire tutte le fasi di realizzazione, fino alla generazione del file finito da inviare alla tipografia.
Ed infine si arriva alla soddisfazione finale, la pubblicazione delle versioni digitali su Avenza, che ci permette di condividere e distribuire il risultato di mesi e mesi di lavoro, in tempi rapidissimi.
